Confidence, Community and International Women’s Day
Why Giving Back Matters More Than Ever
International Women’s Day feels a little different this year.
At Calexico, we see every day how powerful clothing can be. The right outfit isn’t just about style, it’s about confidence. When a woman feels good in what she’s wearing, something shifts. She stands taller. She walks differently. She speaks with greater certainty. She takes up space.
Fashion has always been about more than what we wear. At its best, it’s a tool that empowers us to show up as our best selves.
Recently, our founder Nicky sat down with Kylie from Suited to Success, a Brisbane organisation dedicated to helping women overcome barriers to employment. The conversation was a powerful reminder that confidence isn’t something everyone starts with, and for many women, rebuilding it takes courage, support, and opportunity.

When an Interview Means More Than a Job
Many of the women supported by Suited to Success are re-entering the workforce after incredibly difficult circumstances. For them, a job interview isn’t just about employment.
It’s about independence.
It’s about dignity.
It’s about reclaiming control over their future.
What stood out most during the conversation was a challenge many people wouldn’t immediately think about, the shortage of clothing options for younger women entering the workforce, particularly those under 20.
These young women don’t want to dress in traditional corporate attire that feels disconnected from who they are.
They don’t want to feel older than they are.
They simply want to feel normal, confident and capable when they walk into an interview.
And that’s something clothing can help provide.
Confidence Is Foundational
At Calexico, we’ve always believed that confidence starts with feeling comfortable in your own skin. When a woman feels supported in how she presents herself to the world, the impact goes far beyond the outfit.
Confidence can open doors.
It can shift the way someone walks into a room, the way they answer a question, or the way they see their own potential.
International Women’s Day is often a moment of celebration, recognising the achievements of women across industries and communities. But it’s also a moment to reflect on the role we all play in supporting one another.
A Community Effort
While Calexico calls James Street home, our responsibility as a business extends far beyond the street we trade on. Community is at the heart of what we do, and our team believes strongly in contributing to something larger than ourselves.
This year, that commitment is taking a very tangible form.
Throughout the month of March, Calexico Boutique will be a drop-off point for gently worn clothing suitable for young women entering the workforce, in support of Suited to Success.
These donations can help give a young woman the confidence she needs to walk into an interview feeling prepared and empowered.
If you have something in your wardrobe that could help a young woman step into her next chapter with confidence, we encourage you to donate.
Because confidence isn’t superficial.
It’s foundational.
And when women rise, everything rises with them.
Xx Nicky
