Inside the Wardrobe: 5 Questions with Anine Bing
From vintage-inspired denim to rock 'n' roll tailoring, Anine Bing has carved out a signature style that resonates globally, and here at Calexico she’s been part of our story for over a decade. In this exclusive Q&A, the L.A.-based designer reflects on her design evolution, her love of classic cuts, and the wardrobe staples she can’t live without. Whether you’re packing for a European summer or perfecting your off-duty uniform, her insights are pure inspiration.

What is your favourite ANINE BING denim cut and why?
I’m in love with our Kate denim. It has that perfect ’90s-inspired cut—straight leg, mid rise. A true classic that feels both timeless and effortlessly cool. I wear mine almost every day. I’m also obsessed with the Hugh jean. It has a wider leg that’s perfect for spring and summer, styled with a crisp button-down or a simple tee. Both are staples in my wardrobe.

How has ANINE BING denim evolved since the beginning of your design journey?
Denim has always been at the core of ANINE BING. It was actually the reason I started the brand—I could never find the perfect pair. So I decided to design my own. At the time, it was all about skinny, low-rise styles with a rock 'n' roll edge. Since then, our denim has evolved. I still love a great skinny, but I'm also drawn to the perfect straight-leg or a relaxed, wide-leg fit. There's nothing better than putting on a pair of jeans that fits just right. It's effortless, timeless, and the foundation of my everyday uniform.
You’ve been with Calexico for 10 years now, when was the last time you visited Australia?
I visited Australia when we opened our Sydney store in 2019. I absolutely loved it. It's such a beautiful country, and the people are incredibly kind and welcoming. I hope to come back soon.
What are the 5 essential items every girl needs in their wardrobe?
A perfect pair of vintage-inspired jeans.
A well-tailored blazer you can throw over anything.
A timeless white tee.
A leather jacket that gets better with age.
And a classic handbag that pulls everything together.
Oh, and let's not forget about a good pair of sunglasses.
These are the pieces I reach for on repeat—they’re the foundation of my personal uniform.

What has been your biggest pinch-me moment for ANINE BING?
There have been so many special moments. Seeing women around the world wearing our pieces never gets old, but opening our flagship store on Melrose was truly surreal. I started this brand from my garage, and walking into a space that came from a dream and years of hard work was incredibly emotional. It reminded me that anything is possible with vision and persistence.
